Encrypted Communications Platform for a Privacy-First Product

A US-based tech company building a privacy-first secure communications platform needed an integral development partner to bring several of its core applications to life. Zluck became that partner, delivering an encrypted video meeting application across every platform, a VPN client for mobile and desktop, a two-factor authenticator, and a full account management web application over an 18-month engagement

THE CLIENT’S SITUATION

Building for Users Who Cannot Afford to Be Compromised

The client is building a privacy-first secure communications platform for users who need genuine security, not just the appearance of it. Their product sits in a category that includes journalists, legal professionals, executives, and privacy-conscious individuals and teams who understand that conventional communication tools, however convenient, were not designed with their security needs in mind.

The platform’s promise is end-to-end encryption at every layer. Video meetings, team messaging, file sharing, and VPN connectivity all run through encrypted tunnels, so that nothing a user sends, says, or shares can be intercepted by a third party. Delivering on that promise required applications built to a security standard that most development teams are not equipped for.

Zluck was brought in as an integral development partner to build several of the platform’s core applications. The engagement required not just technical competence across multiple platforms simultaneously, but a genuine understanding of the security requirements and constraints that applied to every design and implementation decision.

THE CHALLENGE

Security Cannot Be an Afterthought Across Any Platform

Building for a privacy-first product is fundamentally different from building a standard consumer application. In a conventional app, security is one consideration among many. In this product, security is the entire value proposition. Every feature, every data flow, every API call, and every user interaction had to be designed with the assumption that someone might be trying to intercept it.

The video conferencing application Zluck built needed to work across every platform the client supports, including a hardened privacy-focused mobile operating system used by security-conscious users. Building a video meeting application that performs reliably on a hardened OS, which imposes strict restrictions on app behaviour and data access, while maintaining the same user experience as the standard mobile and browser versions, was a specific technical challenge that required deep platform knowledge.

Across all applications, Zluck had to work within an architecture defined by the client’s overall security model, integrating cleanly with the existing infrastructure while building components that could be trusted to uphold the platform’s privacy guarantees.

WHY THIS REQUIRED SPECIALIST DEVELOPMENT

Standard App Development Practices Do Not Apply Here

Most mobile and web applications are built with the assumption of a trusted backend and conventional data flows. Security layers are added on top of a standard architecture. In a product like this, the security architecture is the foundation, and everything else is built around it.

WireGuard-based VPN tunnelling, end-to-end encrypted messaging protocols, and the specific constraints of hardened privacy-focused operating systems all require development experience that goes beyond standard mobile app development. The team Zluck assigned to this engagement needed to understand not just how to build the features, but why the security model required them to be built in a specific way.

HOW WE BUILT IT

Four Applications, One Consistent Security Standard

Zluck’s engagement covered four distinct application areas within the broader product suite, each requiring its own platform expertise while contributing to a single cohesive user experience across the platform.

Applications Delivered

Encrypted Video Conferencing (All Platforms)

Zluck built the video conferencing application across every platform the client supports: Android, iOS, browser-based web app, and a hardened privacy-focused mobile operating system. The application provides encrypted video meetings, screen sharing, and collaboration tools, all running through the platform’s VPN layer. The hardened-OS version required specific adaptation to work within that operating system’s strict privacy and security constraints while maintaining full feature parity with other platforms.

VPN Client (Android, iOS, Mac)

Zluck built the VPN client application for Android, iOS, and Mac. It establishes a WireGuard end-to-end encrypted tunnel from the user’s device to the platform’s secure servers, forming the foundation of the platform’s privacy guarantee. Every other application on the platform runs through this tunnel. Building it correctly across three platforms, with reliable connection management and a clean user experience on each, was a foundational responsibility.

Two-Factor Authenticator (Mobile and Hardened OS)

Zluck built the authenticator application for standard Android and for a hardened privacy-focused mobile operating system. It generates one-time passwords for secure sign-in across the platform’s applications, adding a second layer of authentication that protects accounts even if credentials are compromised. As with the video application, the hardened-OS version required specific handling to work within that environment’s constraints.

Account Web Application: Full User and Subscription Platform

Zluck built the complete account management web application that serves as the central hub for the platform. This covers user registration and login, subscription management and billing, device management, sub-user account creation and permissions, usage reporting, download links for all platform applications, and onboarding walkthroughs. It is the administrative and commercial backbone of the entire product, handling the full user lifecycle from first sign-up through ongoing subscription management.

OUR APPROACH AND PROCESS

Working Within a Larger Product Architecture

This engagement was collaborative by nature. The client had an overall product vision, a defined security architecture, and other development contributors working on different parts of the platform. Zluck’s role was to deliver its specific components to the standard the platform required, integrate cleanly with the existing infrastructure, and communicate reliably throughout.

Working as an integral partner rather than a standalone vendor meant understanding the broader product context, not just the immediate specifications. Decisions made on one application had implications for others. The team needed to stay aligned with the client’s architecture decisions and flag anything that could affect the platform’s security model.

Over an 18-month engagement, the team delivered across four application areas without losing momentum or requiring the client to spend significant time managing the development process. Regular updates, clear milestone tracking, and responsive communication throughout kept the engagement running efficiently.

A CHALLENGE WE DID NOT EXPECT

A Hardened OS That Demands Precision

Hardened privacy-focused operating systems are used specifically because they restrict what applications can do. Those restrictions are the point. But they also mean that development practices that work perfectly on standard mobile operating systems do not always work on a hardened OS, and the failure modes are not always obvious until testing on the actual platform.

Building the video and authenticator applications for the hardened OS required systematic testing and adaptation throughout the build, not just at the end. Several assumptions about how the operating system handles media permissions, background processes, and network access had to be revisited and rebuilt. The result was applications that work correctly within the OS’s constraints and give privacy-conscious users the same experience as every other platform.

Client Reviews

“Their team is highly responsive and professional. Milestones were delivered on time. When we needed rapid updates or changes in direction, they responded without hesitation and without hidden costs. They work as a genuine extension of our team, not as a vendor managing a contract. Their technical expertise combined with their commitment to the outcome is what made this engagement successful.”

RESULTS AND IMPACT

Live Across Every Platform, Actively in Use

All four application areas Zluck delivered are live and actively in use as part of the platform. The video conferencing application runs across every platform the client supports. The VPN client provides the encrypted foundation on Android, iOS, and Mac. The authenticator secures sign-in for privacy-conscious users including those on a hardened operating system. The account web application manages the full commercial and user lifecycle of the platform.

This engagement demonstrated Zluck’s ability to work within a complex, security-constrained product environment, deliver across multiple platforms simultaneously, and function as a reliable integral partner rather than a vendor working to a specification. The platform is live, the applications are performing, and the client continues to build on the foundation that was delivered.
